The U.S. National Institue of Health spends close to $300m on Mind and Body Research every year.
Since there is some evidence that mind and body approaches such as prayer and meditation have helped some people with their symptoms, resilience, and well-being, the scientific community wants to know the mechanisms of action by which these approaches impact the body.
So, if you want to keep your body healthy, you have to be very intentional about finding ways to keep your heart happy. How do you do that?
Four ways to keep your heart happy and your body healthy
- First, consciously think about what you are thinking about. If you want to keep your heart happy, don’t allow your mind to think about whatever it chooses. You have to intentionally decide what you think about. (Prov. 4:8)
- Second, guard your heart and mind against anything that will make you sad. Besides taking charge of what you think, you also have to protect your heart. Sometimes, you cannot escape people giving you bad news about a family member, a friend, or a loved one. But, you drain your positive energy and become negative when you intentionally read, talk about, or listen to bad news. Do everything you can to protect your heart and stay away from bad news that poisons the state of your mind. (Prov. 4:23)
- Third, choose what you listen to. Kind words are like a honeycomb — sweet to your soul and health to your bones (Prov. 16:24). If you want to keep your heart happy, choose to listen to pleasant and kind words. Don’t trivialize what and who you listen to. What you hear shapes what you think, what you think informs what you do, and what you do dictates what you get in life.
- Last but not least, recognize the power of your heart. Life is déjà vu. Everything you do, you think about first. What you are reading is what I am thinking. The next thing you are going to do is what you are thinking about right now. This is why you do some things and someone yells, “what are you thinking?!” and when people do things without thinking, we say they have lost their mind. Your heart and mind are a seat of power because everything flows from there, so protect it (Prov. 4:23).
In conclusion, do everything to keep your heart in a joyful and happy state, it is like a good medicine that brings health to your body. Now, go ahead and have a great heartitude!
