The Power of vision

After my college education, I desired to pursue an advanced degree outside Africa.

I traveled overseas in my mind, pictured myself getting a visa, departing Africa, arriving in Europe or North America, settling down in the student hostel.

I imagined myself registering as a graduate student, meeting new friends, learning new culture, and experiencing a life different from what I was used to.

The vision to study abroad sharpened my decision-making, kept me focused, and made me disciplined.

Two years after I graduated from college, I started my graduate program at Free University of Brussels in Belgium.

That experience made me understood the power of vision and I’ve never stop envisioning since then.

What is vision?

Vision is a mental picture of a preferred future. Vision is seeing in your mind what you cannot see with your eyes.

If your mind is a camera and your preferred future is an object, vision is capturing a high-resolution picture of that preferred future in your mind even if that picture contradicts what you see right now with your eyes.

You are a visionary leader when you can paint a visible picture of an invisible future in the hearts and minds of other people.

Vision is like a house first built in the mind of an architect, then the house becomes a plan built on paper, and finally becomes house structure built on the ground.

If you cannot see it in your mind, you will not see it with your eyes.

Great Leaders are visionaries

Visiting Dubai is one of the items on my bucket list.

I want to see for myself how the visionary rulers of this Arabian Peninsula transformed what was mostly a desert only a few decades ago into an international hub for commerce, tourism, and transportation.

Dubai before and after

Dubai before and after

Dubai is living proof that vision has the power to transform a desert into a green haven, that visionary leadership can make all the difference for you, your organization, your community, or your country.

If your life, your organization, your community, or your country looks like a desert right now, don’t lose hope.

You too can turn the desert situation in your life to a flourishing environment, but you have to see it now in your mind if you want to see it then with your eyes.
